Module 1 - Introduction to Roadways to Reading

Don’t let the word ‘Introduction’ fool you!  In this module we dive right in with an overview of the whole Roadways to Reading system and how it is different than traditional programs.  You’ll get:.

• An overview of the results you can expect with this program

• An introduction to each of the 5 Pillars of Reading

By the end of this module 

You’ll have a detailed daily plan showing how to structure your Roadways to Reading sessions with your students, so that you never have to worry about how to fit everything in!

Module 2 - Assessment

This is one of the shortest modules, but SO important!  Without a solid Assessment strategy, you don’t know if your program is on track.  You’ll learn:

• Why you need a system for universal assessment

• Understanding your RTI triangle

• The best informal reading inventories and how to use them

• How to assess individual student needs in each of the 5 Pillars of Reading

• Continuous monitoring – implement a simple system to collect and track your data

By the end of this module 

You'll have a plan in place for universal assessment as well as a system for continuous monitoring.  Going forward you will be able to collect, track, and interpret your data without the overwhelm!

Module 3 - Phonics

This is one of the largest modules for a good reason – Phonics and Phonological Awareness are essential for a child to become a reader.  You’ll learn:

• The difference between Phonics and Phonological Awareness and a look at the research

• Phonological Awareness assessment, sequence, direct teaching guide and resources

• Phonics assessment, sequence, direct teaching, daily review and guided practice guides

• How to apply phonics to reading and writing

Module 5 - Vocabulary

This module is important because of the strong reciprocal connection between Comprehension and Vocabulary.  You’ll learn:

• The four key elements of Vocabulary Instruction

I’m already busy, how much time will this take?

There are 6 lesson modules, and each video is approximately ½ hour.  You may also want to spend some time reading up on the recommended resources.  Most teachers have the Roadways to Reading system up and running in their classrooms within 2 weeks after completing the training.  There are strategies in the course that we know you will want to start using right away!
