Stop the Summer Slide!

Many of our students, especially those who struggle with reading, have a tendency to lose ground in reading skills over the summer. When September hits and teachers are assessing, students losing one to two reading levels is a common phenomenon. Little practice, or even exposure to print over a two month duration can cause this backslide.

Conditioning Camp for Bookworms strives to get students back into the routine of reading before they head back to class. This camp is designed to provide approximately 20 hours of reading instruction and practice over a two-week period. It ensures that sufficient time on task is provided to see growth.

The Conditioning Camp for Bookworms program is centered around our evidence-based Roadways to Reading curriculum. In addition, the remaining ten hours are filled up with outdoor activities, arts and crafts, and time to socialize and make new friend connections.

How do we ensure results over the two week period?  First, our camp staff is composed of our Roadways Literacy professional staff along with new young teachers and some teachers in training.  These teachers are experts in the Roadways to Reading program.

Second, just like the Roadways to Reading program, we provide continuous assessment to promote high levels of achievement for every student every day.  During the first two days, the teacher/leaders observe and assess to get a good idea of the level each student is reading at. By considering and analyzing the results of daily reading tasks, teachers are able to choose material to continually challenge the students and push their reading levels close to where they left off in June.

Camp registration is well underway!  If you know a bookworm who could benefit from our 2-week program please pass this info along.  Click here to go to the registration page!
